Premium Bowl Cores
We core, you turn.
We core, you turn.
At PRT, innovation is a part of our business. Turns out, so is making bowl cores. After much research and hands-on turning, we adapted a traditional lathe for increased accuracy, giving us cores that are more concentric and easier for woodworkers to turn.
After milling instrument wood for luthiers for over 35 years, we can confidently say ‘we know wood’. We’ve applied that experience and knowledge to making bowl cores for woodturners. Before we even cut a log for cores, we let those logs season for up to several months, which brings out the natural color in the wood. After we expertly turn the cores, we dry them for one week in a specialized kiln, using technology we developed for our guitar wood.
Most of the wood we use for bowl cores is found within a 50-mile radius of the Pacific Rim Tonewoods mill in the Skagit Valley. Our primary sources are Big leaf Maple, in plain and figured, and Red alder. Both make excellent cores for intricate designs and fine detailing.

As amateur bowl turners ourselves, we know how important it is to start with a good core. Buying cores from PRT means less heavy lifting and more hands-on instruction time. We can produce over 600 quality cores a week — cores that can help students craft better results.
